Alright, let's be honest.
I am Canadian, and I am not proud of Canada. I'm not proud to be Canadian and I'm not a patriot.
There are good reasons for this. I was a patriot when I was a little kid when I was stupid and had no critical reasoning ability. But as a grown man, I'm not proud to be a Canadian.
Well first of all, Canada was until very recently an aparteid state. Yes, we were just as bad as the South Africans and in some ways even worse. Up until the nineteen nineties, native Canadians had their children abducted and kept in concentration camps called Residential schools. These schools were built with the intent of kiling off "Indian" culture and turning these Native children into fine indentured slaves. Children in these residential schools all across Canada were subjected to physical, mental and sexual abuse by the priests and nuns who ran these schools.
This system was started in the 1860's shortly after Canada was born as a nation, when the remaining Native canadians not murdered by disease and the hunting of the buffalo were shipped off to reservations, which today are about at the development leve of Afghanistan. In Canada "Indian" reserves typically have no clean running water, have high drug addiction and unemployment and are opressed by the Federal government.
In Canada, Asian Canadians could not vote until the 1950's and women could not vote until the twenties; they weren't even counted as people under the constitution until the start of the first world war. When in the united states women had been declared as people almost forty years earlier.
Today in Canada we have a system of government that has fewer checks and balances than the American system. The Americans, who Canadains as a rule mock and despise as being backwards conservative fucks. Right now the Americans are more economically recovered than us from the great recession of 08 and have made greater strides with gay rights, trans rights and legalisation of weed. The country we mock and deride.
Right now we have a government that is trying to destroy our socialised medicine and emulate the American system of medicine where only the rich had medicine and the poor had the ability to die as soon as possible.
In Canada wages have stagnated since the 1970's and living costs have risen and the wages of CEO's have risen even more.
No I'm not proud to be Canadian. Canada is a land of inequality, where raping and murdering aboriginal women is a victimless crime and our leadership works tirelessly to strip us of our voting rights.

I am an Armenian immigrant born in Lebanon that has moved to Canada, and I have found more tolerance here then I have found in the Middle East, especially towards foreigners and LGBT (I was living in Kuwait for most of my life and let's just say that LGBTs were banned and immigrants from Iran and East Asia were mistreated). I have hardly been in Canada for a year, but it's a huge improvement for me. As much as I was shocked to learn of Canada's poor native treatment myself, I have to admit that it seems the situation is improving and even though the Harper government is full of incompetent people, it could be America. 
Canadians and other westerners need to realize how privileged they are compared to the rest of us who are trying our best to improve our own nations.
