Remembrance Day Wakeup Call

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada, Veterans Day in the USA. While it's tempting to fall into the comfort of routine, I have to urge people to ask what the fuck is going on. 

I was walking through town the other day and I saw something I hadn't noticed before. It was a memorial for the Afghan War. Canadians spent from 2001 to 2013 battling it out in the mountain Country of Afghanistan. 

And I just want to scream. My urge is not to salute to fallen patriots but is to freak out and wonder why the hell we all lost our minds and got ourselves dragged into that hell of a war? 

Think about it, Canadians and other allies spent over thirteen years in Afghanistan, more than twice as long as the Second World War. 

Going back to it, Afghanistan and by extension Iraq were a dogfuck of a war started by the incompetence of an American stooge President and his puppeteer, Darth Cheney. 

For so long, the war in Afghanistan was just a fact of life. There was no end in sight, there were no goals, there was no retreating. It was a sick joke straight out of South Park. 

So this Remembrance day, really take a moment to scream. Take a good look at our national policies that send our soldiers into endless death and danger, to say nothing of the bombing and collateral damage and civilian casualties in places like Afghanistan, Iraq and other places. 

Let us remember not just a rosy, nostalgia tinged look into the past but very recent, very awful wars that ruined many lives and whose aftermath is still being felt all over the near east and wider.
